What the parts are called in Portugal
A Portuguese IBAN has 25 characters: PT50 followed by the 21-digit NIB: bank (4), branch (4), account (11) and two check digits.
Because the NIB already leaves remainder 1 when divided by 97, the IBAN check digits are always 50. A Portuguese IBAN that does not start with PT50 is wrong.
The check digits of PT50 0002 0123 1234 5678 9015 4
- Move the first four characters to the end: 000201231234567890154PT50
- Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 000201231234567890154252950
- Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
- To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 48, and 98 − 48 = 50.
The national check inside the account number
The last two digits make the whole 21-digit NIB leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 97. That is why every Portuguese IBAN starts with PT50. For the example: 54.
