What the parts are called in France
A French IBAN has 27 characters and contains the full RIB: code banque (5 digits), code guichet (5 digits), numéro de compte (11 letters or digits) and the clé RIB (2 digits).
The clé RIB checks the other three parts. It is calculated with letters replaced by digits, so an account number such as 0500013M026 works too. The same format applies in Monaco and the French overseas territories.
The check digits of FR14 2004 1010 0505 0001 3M02 606
- Move the first four characters to the end: 20041010050500013M02606FR14
- Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 200410100505000132202606152714
- Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
- To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 84, and 98 − 84 = 14.
The national check inside the account number
The clé RIB is 97 minus the remainder of (89 × code banque + 15 × code guichet + 3 × account number) divided by 97, with letters in the account number replaced by digits. For the example it is 06.
